The Speaker That Plays a World, Not a Track

There is a moment every regular user of ambient sound apps knows intimately — the moment the loop reveals itself. You’re working, or sleeping, or just trying to quiet a room, and somewhere in the rain or the forest or the café noise, a seam appears. A bird call repeats at exactly the same interval. A wave breaks with exactly the same weight. The illusion holds right up until it doesn’t, and then you’re not listening to rain anymore — you’re listening to a machine doing a trick.

Mur mur, a prototype speaker developed by design studios oio and mattering, is built around a single idea: what if the sound you heard came from a place that actually exists, rather than a recording of one?

Worlds, Not Prompts

The answer mur mur proposes is not another generative AI system. The team was deliberate about this distinction — as they put it on their site, they didn’t want to generate infinite soundscapes from a prompt. Instead, they built what they describe as small worlds that function as infinite ambient sound engines: each one has terrain, weather patterns, a society of hundreds of autonomous digital agents, and its own underlying narratives and rhythms.

There are currently three worlds available. The Block is a tiny city — morning rush hours, street musicians, delivery robots, pigeons. The Plot is a forest full of birds, crackling leaves, and the occasional lost hiker. The Pond is a water ecosystem with waves, fish, ducks, and passing boats. Each world runs continuously, whether anyone is listening or not. The weather shifts, the agents move and interact, and what comes out of the speaker is the real-time sonic consequence of all that activity — never exactly the same twice, never looping, never generated from a text description of a mood. As Yanko Design put it, the instruction on the site says it plainly: don’t shake it, because there are living agents inside. It’s a funny thing to say about a piece of software. It’s also exactly the right way to describe what mur mur is actually doing.

A Different Relationship with Sound

What makes mur mur genuinely interesting as a listening proposition isn’t just the technology underneath it — it’s the relationship it proposes between the listener and the sound. Most ambient audio, whether it’s a Spotify playlist, a white noise app, or a generative AI track, is fundamentally a service: you request something, it delivers it, you consume it. Mur mur inverts that dynamic entirely.

You don’t press play. You don’t pause. You don’t prompt. The world inside the speaker keeps running regardless of your attention, and you either tune in or you don’t. As Sonic Field noted in its analysis of the project, the sound ecosystem diagrams make mur mur legible as a composition system rather than a speaker mockup — the listener can let a room fill with an evolving ambient field, but can also look inside a small lens at the top of the device and see what’s producing it.

That dual mode — atmosphere and cause, listening and watching — is a genuinely different listening habit from anything the ambient sound category has proposed before. It’s closer to the experience of sitting near a window and hearing what’s happening outside than it is to putting on a record.

The Ambient Lineage This Sits In

It would be easy to position mur mur as a tech product and miss the cultural lineage it’s operating within. Brian Eno’s original conception of ambient music — articulated with Ambient 1: Music for Airports in 1978 — was specifically about creating sound environments that were as ignorable as they were interesting, that could coexist with thought rather than demanding attention. The generative systems Eno worked with ever since, including his own Bloom app and the Koan software he used in the 1990s, were early attempts to build music that never repeated exactly.

Mur mur takes that idea and adds a layer Eno’s systems didn’t have: causality. The sound isn’t just procedurally generated — it’s the byproduct of a simulated world with its own internal logic. When it starts to rain in The Plot, you hear rain because it’s raining in the simulation, not because a rain algorithm decided to trigger. That distinction sounds philosophical until you actually sit with it, at which point it changes the quality of attention the sound produces.

Eno’s attempts to build music that never repeated didn’t stop with Koan. In 2008, he released Bloom — a generative music app for iOS co-developed with Peter Chilvers — followed by Trope and Air, a third app built around vocal samples. All three work on similar principles: the user sets a mood, interacts minimally, and the system generates ambient compositions that evolve without looping. More recently,in 2024, filmmaker Gary Hustwit applied the same logic to documentary film with ENO, a generative movie about Eno himself that produces a unique edit every time it plays. What connects all of these projects — from the 1996 Koan floppy disk to the 2008 iOS apps to mur mur in 2026 — is the same underlying conviction: that the most interesting thing a sound system can do is develop a life that doesn’t depend on the listener’s commands. Where Eno’s tools gave users seeds to plant and then stepped back, mur mur removes even that minimal gesture of control. There is no tap, no mood setting, no seed. There is only a world that was already running before you arrived, and will keep running after you leave.

Still a Prototype — But Already Connectable

Mur mur is not yet a product you can buy. The team has built a small number of prototypes for themselves and developed the core world-sound engines, and is currently looking for musicians, technologists, and hardware producers to help bring it to commercial reality — potentially as a desk object, a keychain, or a studio tool.

In the meantime, the radio version is live at murmur.living, where anyone can tune in and watch the simulation running in real time. There is also a Max for Live patch that allows the audio to be routed directly into Ableton for music production — a detail that opens the project up to a completely different use case, turning mur mur from a listening device into a generative source for electronic music composition.

As Creative Applications noted, the project raises a question that goes beyond ambient sound: as digital objects become more intelligent, should they merely respond to us, or should they be allowed to develop lives of their own? Mur mur doesn’t answer that question. It just makes it audible.

That the project has already landed on Hypebeast — a platform whose audience skews toward design, streetwear, and cultural objects rather than music technology — says something meaningful about where mur mur sits. It hasn’t reached the market yet. It doesn’t have a price tag or a release date. But it has already crossed the boundary between music tool and cultural artifact, which is a different kind of arrival entirely.
