SZIGET: a perfect summer vacation for fans of music, art and culture.
From Aug. 7 to 12, Budapest will host a diverse selection of artists from all over Europe in the atmospheric setting of Sziget Fesztivál (in Hungarian), on the island nestled in the Danube River ‘Óbudai-sziget’ also referred to as the “Island of Freedom.”
In its 30th anniversary year, Sziget Festival will feature more than 50 venues ready to welcome hundreds of artists not only musicians but also, and in large numbers, circus performers, dancers, jugglers, acrobats and thespians. A nonstop succession of performances, workshops, sports activities and talks make the Hungarian event an ode to heterogeneity, integration and the discovery of new cultures without borders.
The festival gets its name from the Hungarian word “sziget,” which actually means “island.” Started in 1993 as a modest display of local talent, it has gradually expanded its scope, becoming one of the world’s largest cultural events. Its duration, a full week, sets it apart from traditional summer festivals. With more than 60 stages, the Sziget Festival is not limited to live music, but provides a platform for a wide range of art forms, including DJ sets, theater, film screenings, dance, circus, street performers and sports. It is a melting pot of artistic and musical expressions, welcoming genres ranging from pop to metal, hip hop to jazz, and beyond.
The idea for the festival was born in 1993 by Péter Sziámi Müller, with the organization of Gerendai Károly. Since then, it has grown steadily, also welcoming world-renowned international artists. Although it has had several names over the years, since 2002 it has been known simply as Sziget Festival. In addition to the main festival, it has also had a counterpart in Transylvania called Peninsula/Félsziget since 2003.

In this beautiful setting, in this world outside of time and the usual everyday, the programming of Lightstage, the boutique stage that over the years has become a landmark for Szitizens on Liberty Island, returns again in 2024.
Lightstage 2024 will also be able to count on the support of MIC and SIAE as part of the “Per Chi Crea” program, which awarded the project: New Sounds From Italy presented by L’Alternativa srl.

Also ready are the timelines of the Circus, Theater and Dance Theater section, Magic Mirror with its performances that unabashedly enter the queer world and the daily parades that enliven the island every day at a wide variety of times. Also presented was the new Sziget Beach concept embellished with a series of acoustic performances and the acclaimed Traveling Funfair village, with old-fashioned entertainment that takes us back a century with games of skill and dexterity.
Ticket sales for the 2024 edition are proceeding apace to the point that twice as many 6-day passes have already been purchased compared to last year’s edition. A large turnout is expected, most of which will be accommodated in the camping areas inside the island provided with adequate facilities such as bathrooms and showers to serve the tens of thousands of Szitizens ready to immerse themselves in the pure atmosphere of the event.
The city of Budapest is easily accessible from Italy, which can count on multiple air connections with almost all the major capitals of our country. Instead, for those who would like to reach the festival by organized Bus or by car, the ‘highway provides a convenient and well-served route for driving enthusiasts. The organized Bus will leave on August 6 evening from Bologna, Padua and Trieste. There is also a parking lot near the festival area that can be reserved from the official festival website.
The Sziget Festival takes place in the city, less than 20 minutes from the city center, and is well connected by both public transportation and the contracted Taxi service. In addition to the normal services, only for the days from August 6 to 13, you can buy the Sziget City Pass by Budapest Card that allows access to the thermal baths for free, use of the shuttle bus for the route from the airport to the island and vice versa, use of public transport and the opportunity to take advantage of the countless discounts in museums, restaurants and attractions or monuments. An all-round organization as always that also allows you to experience the Hungarian capital with its artistic beauties and its nighttime contents made up of boat parties and parties in suggestive places such as the castle.
This is a total vacation, where art, music, culture and sociability come together in an experience that is difficult to repeat elsewhere and that has been going on for decades, always preserving the usual philosophy and approach on the part of visitors.
