Intervista alla band Dragonette, in Italia per il tour promozionale di “Lonely Heart”

In Italia per il tour promozionale della loro canzone “Lonely Heart“, distribuita in Italia dalla Do It Yourself, Giovedi 12 Gennaio 2017 abbiamo incontrato la band Dragonette a Milano per una chiacchierata.

Attivi dal 2005 con 2 album in studio pubblicati, il gruppo si é formato a Toronto.
La formazione si é evoluta nel corso degli anni, assestandosi ad oggi con Martina alla voce, Dan al basso e Joel alla batteria. Si definiscono un gruppo indie/new wave, ma al tempo stesso molto aperti musicalmente, soprattutto verso il genere pop/dance.
Successo strepitoso nel 2010 con “Hello” scritto assieme a Martin Solveig, che li ha portati a girare il mondo.

Direttamente dalla precedente intervista a Brescia, arrivano due terzi del gruppo, Martina e Dan. Il tempo di scaldarsi un attimo dai -1° che segnava la macchina e cominciamo l’intervista.

Dove avete lasciato Joel? Come mai non é venuto quì in Italia?

Joel é a Toronto. Dato che non siamo qui per fare un concerto ma interviste e alcune feste ha preferito stare a casa.

Martina, ho saputo che hai origini italiane. Da che parte d’Italia?

I miei nonni sono italiani, vengono dalla Calabria. Mentre per l’altra metá sono inglese e danese.

Domani sera o sabato sera avete intenzione di fare serata qui a Milano?

No, abbiamo giá partecipato a vari parties a Firenze. Lunedì, martedì, mercoledì, troppo?! (ride, ndr). Abbiamo suonato per un evento di Luisa Via Roma in occasione del Pitti Uomo.

Vi piace la moda italiana?

Si, moltissimo!

Avete iniziato a collaborare con artisti come Don Diablo, Martin Solveig, Kaskade, prima ancora che nascesse il fenomeno EDM. Che differenza c’è tra quegli anni e oggi?

Sembra che adesso non ci sia differenza di generi musicali. L’EDM é pop, tutto é pop. Prima i dj venivano considerati come artisti che suonavano musica “alternativa” nei club, era difficile sentirli in radio. Poi qualcosa é cambiato. Mi viene in mente Rihanna, il suo suono si é molto spostato verso l’EDM. Dj come Kaskade, Skrillex, Diplo ora come ora producono vera e propria musica pop. All’inizio erano due cose totalmente separate, c’era la musica elettronica che veniva prodotta dai dj e dall’altra parte la musica synth pop. Poi ad un certo punto sono iniziate a sentirsi canzoni EDM con una parte vocale pop, e questo ha permesso ai produttori di questo genere di essere passati in radio. Le canzoni di oggi le puoi sentire in radio come le puoi sentire nei festival. I giovani di oggi ascoltano questa musica come noi alla loro età ascoltavamo i Beatles!

Pensate che la vostra “Hello” abbia contribuito ad accrescere la scena della musica elettronica?

Assolutamente! Grazie ad “Hello” i Dragonette sono diventati un nome internazionale. Abbiamo guadagnato credibilitá e rispetto nell’industria della musica elettronica, e questo ci ha permesso di collaborare con nuovi artisti.

Come avete conosciuto questi dj? Per esempio Martin Solveig..?

In Australia. Eravamo sul pullman che dall’aeroporto ci portava in cittá e casualmente ci siamo conosciuti.

E Don Diablo?

Se non ricordo male lui ci mandò una traccia. Era la base di “Animale” che di lì a poco avremmo ricantato e pubblicato (era il 2011 e Don Diablo aveva iniziato la sua attività da dj da sette anni, ndr). Ci arriva ogni giorno moltissima musica. Per mail si lavora sempre di più.

Siete mai stati a Las Vegas? Che aria si respira per quanto riguarda questo genere musicale?

E’ impressionante come città. E’ incredibile il fatto che quando ti muovi in macchina vedi i cartelloni pubblicitari con solo nomi o facce di artisti EDM. Ti giri vedi Tiesto, guardi dall’altra parte vedi Calvin Harris. E’ stato ancora di più emozionante leggere la scritta Dragonette. Wow! La gente che suona li è perchè ha fatto delle grandi canzoni che vanno in quel momento. Quando “Hello” andava forte noi facevamo viaggi da una parte all’altra del mondo. Andavamo a Las Vegas da Londra, ci facevamo 10 ore di aereo per suonare solo anche solo 15 minuti. “Suonate queste tre canzoni e poi una a vostro piacimento” ci dicevano. E’ tutto un altro mondo, ma penso che non sia l’ambiente adatto a noi come gruppo. Noi collaboriamo molto con artisti di musica elettronica ma fondamentalmente facciamo musica alternativa. Ogni volta che suoniamo a Las Vegas non siamo completamente a nostro agio, “è sempre un pò.. ciao, come si fa?” (dice Martina nel suo italiano maccheronico, ndr). I Dragonette sono una indie band, c’è il batterista, c’è il bassista, il chitarrista, la cantante. Ora va di moda il dj con la musica elettronica. Ma quando abbiamo iniziato noi erano le band che la facevano da padrona. Ed è sempre stato cosi. Penso ai New Order, a Prince col suo gruppo, ai Tears For Fears. Poi pian piano la scena è cambiata, sono nati i Daft Punk e via dicendo. Noi veniamo dalle band, non dai dj.

Con quale producer vorreste collaborare in futuro?

Dan: su tutti mi piacerebbe lavorare con Jax Jones e Duke Dumond, amo le loro canzoni.

Martina: sono molti gli artisti con i quali vorrei lavorare, però io non guardo molto al nome di per se dell’artista, ma è la musica che mi deve dare l’ispirazione per comporre, per scrivere il pezzo. Ecco uno con cui mi piacerebbe lavorare è Diplo, sono sicura che uscirebbe fuori una produzione strana, diversa. Non mi interessa puntare sul commerciale con lui.

C’è qualche artista italiano che pensiate sia interessante?

A Martina piace molto Jovanotti (risponde diretto Dan, ndr).

L’hai mai incontrato? Non gli hai mai scritto?

Purtroppo no, fammelo conoscere! Un pò di tempo fa ho scoperto anche un gruppo, si chiamava Il Genio (hanno prodotto nel 2008 la hit “Pop Porno“, ndr). Mi piacevano molto!

Com’è nato il vostro singolo “Lonely Heart”? Come nasce solitamente la vostra musica?

Stavamo scrivendo un pezzo a Los Angeles. Dovevamo fare una canzone leggera e allegra, ma piano piano si è trasformata in qualcosa di più profondo. Ecco che già dal titolo “cuore solitario” la canzone era diventata un pezzo malinconico, ma al tempo stesso divertente. Le nostre canzoni nascono un pò cosi.

A quale delle vostre canzoni siete più affezionati?

Dan: “Run Run Run“.

Martina: “Fixin To Thrill“.

Pezzo più bello della storia?

Martina: “Return Of The Mack” di Mark Morrison. Il groove è qualcosa di incredibile, è molto sexy.

Dan: la canzone che mi rende davvero felice è degli Heart Wind And Fire, “September“. Mi piace un sacco la disco music. Un pò di anni fa ho visto un film francese (Quasi Amici, ndr) e il film parte proprio con questa canzone. L’ho appezzato ancora di piu il film. Io sono bassista, e il giro di basso di “September” è incredibile!

Where is Joel?

Joel is in Toronto. We are not here for a concert, but interviews and some parties and he preferred to stay at home.

Martina, you have Italian origins. Where are you from?

My grandparents are Italians, they are from Calabria. I’m am also English and Danish.

Tomorrow night or Saturday night are you going to parties here in Milan?

No, we have already participated in various parties in Florence. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday (laughs). We played for an event of Luisa Via Roma for Pitti Uomo.

Do you like Italian fashion?

Yes a lot!

You have started working with artists such as Don Diablo, Martin Solveig, Kaskade, before the EDM’s start. What is the difference between that time and today?

It seems that now there is no difference of musical genres. The EDM is pop, everything is pop. Before the DJs were considered artists who played music “alternative” in the club, it was difficult to hear them on the radio. Then something has changed. For example Rihanna, her sound is very similar to EDM now. DJs like Kaskade, Skrillex, Diplo right now produce real pop music. Ten years old there was the electronic music that was produced by DJ and the other side of the synth pop music. Today the songs you can hear on the radio as you can hear in the festival. Today’s young people are listening to this music as we listened to The Beatles at their age!

Do you Think your “Hello” has contributed to increase the electronic music scene?

Absolutely! Thanks to “Hello” the Dragonette have become an international name. We have gained credibility and respect in the industry of electronic music, and this has allowed us to collaborate with new artists.

How did you met these DJs? For example, Martin Solveig ..?

In Australia. We were on the bus that took us from the airport in the city and casually we met.

And Don Diablo?

He sent us a track. Was instrumental of “Animale”. then we have it sung (it was 2011 and Don Diablo began his dj activities for seven years). Every day there comes a lot of music.

Have you ever been to Las Vegas? What is the atmosphere about electronic music there?

It’s amazing the city. When you move into the car see the billboards with just names or faces of EDM artists. You turn see Tiesto, look the other way see Calvin Harris. It was even more exciting to read the writing Dragonette. Wow! The people who play them is because he has done great songs that are in that moment. When “Hello” was popular we did travel from one part of the world. We went to Las Vegas from London, we were flying 10 hours for playing only  15 minutes. “Play these three songs and then one at your leisure” they told us. It’s whole other world, but I think it is not the right environment to us as a group. We work a lot with electronic music artists but basically we do alternative music. Every time we play in Las Vegas we are not completely at ease. The Dragonette are an indie band, there’s the drummer, the bassist, guitarist, singer. When we started we were the band that made her sway. And it’s always been that way. I think of New Order, Prince with his group, the Tears For Fears. Then gradually the scene plan is changed, they were born Daft Punk and other. We come from the band, not by DJs.

Which Producer would you like to collaborate in the future?

Dan: Jax Jones and Duke Dumond, I love their songs.

Martina: there are many artists with whom I would like to work, but not for the name of the artist, but it’s the music that I must give inspiration to compose. I would like to work with Diplo, I’m sure it would come out off a production strange, different.

Do you like some italian artist?

Martina likes Jovanotti (answers Dan).

Have you ever met he?

Unfortunately not, just let me know! Some time ago I also discovered a group, called Il Genio (they produced the 2008 hit Pop Porno,). I liked very much!

How did your single “Lonely Heart” born?

We were writing a song in Los Angeles. We had to make a happy song, but slowly turned into something deeper. Here they already called “lonely heart” the song had become a melancholy piece, but at the same time fun.

Which of your songs you like best?

Dan: “Run Run Run”.

Martina: “Fixin To Thrill”.

The most beautiful song in history?

Martina: “Return Of The Mack” by Mark Morrison. The groove is something incredible, is very sexy.

Dan: the song that makes me really happy is the Heart Wind And Fire, “September”. I really like the disco music. A few years ago I saw a French film (The Intouchables) and the movie starts with this song. I’m bassist, and the bass of “September” is incredible!
