Si presenta all’Italia, con un’intervista esclusiva per youBEAT, il giovane inglese Liam Tallon, in arte Draft, considerato un vero e proprio ambasciatore della label canadese mau5trap.
Questo intrigante produttore londinese ha già ampiamente dimostrato di sentirsi a suo agio in diversi sotto-generi dell’Electronica, portando il suo stile ad evolversi release dopo release e definendosi poi in ciò che è il suo ultimo EP, rilasciato l’11 Agosto dalla label di deadmau5: “Patience and Time”.
Draft ha mosso i primi passi nel mondo della musica elettronica nel 2013 dopo aver firmato con l’etichetta dicografica inglese Pilot Records, su cui esordisce con la sua prima produzione ufficiale, “Phryday EP“. Questa gli conferisce immediatamente altissima credibilità in un panorama estremamente selettivo come quello inglese. Il citato EP, composto da tre tracce in pieno stile house, ha fatto da trampolino di lancio per le sue produzioni successive, tutte rilasciate a distanza di poco tempo tramite lo stesso label inglese, intitolate rispettivamente “Makeshift Constellations” e “Pillage“.
L’estrema cura nella composizione melodica, l’uso attentissimo di giuste percussioni accompagnate da una profonda bass-line e la meticolosità nella produzione musicale hanno fatto in modo di focalizzare gli occhi (voglio dire.. le orecchie!) del principale label canadese proprio su questo giovane produttore. Nel 2015 Draft firma ufficialmente con la mau5trap, debuttando nel celebre mix “We Are Friends Vol 4” con la traccia “If“. L’anno successivo ha portato un’ondata di innovazione nelle sue produzioni, segno evidente che l’aria del nuovo label ha fatto sentire i suoi effetti benefici; un’ondata che trova la sua esemplificazione nella prima produzione ufficiale segnata mau5trap, ovvero “Left Behind EP“.
Questo nuovo EP, composto da quattro tracce, viene quasi immediatamente seguito dalla pubblicazione del quinto volume di “We Are Friends“, dove Draft gioca ancora una volta il fondamentale ruolo di dover gestire e curare l’intera produzione del mix, nonché prenderne parte con la traccia “Arara“. Non passa molto tempo prima della pubblicazione del secondo EP targato mau5trap, ben noto tra gli appassionati di musica elettronica e non , in quanto presente in esso la traccia “Bishop Takes King“, presente nel documentario online “Legends Rising” di League Of Legends. Dopo aver preso parte alla compilation “Foar Moar Vol 1” con la traccia “Izumi“, è finalmente arrivato il momento del suo ultimo EP, “Patience and Time“, uscito da poco su mau5trap, che molti fan hanno già giudicato come il suo coronamento musicale.
E finalmente, dopo questa breve introduzione dell’artista, ecco a voi l’interessantissima intervista che lo stesso Draft ha concesso in esclusiva a youBEAT:
Prima di tutto, Liam, vorrei farti una domanda per rompere un po il ghiaccio: come mai hai scelto una vespa svolazzante per rappresentare il tuo EP? Ha qualche significato particolare?
L’idea deriva dal mio EP di debutto su mau5trap, in quanto volevo creare un disegno che fosse unico, che attirasse l’attenzione dell’ascoltatore. Avendo visto il buon risultato dell’EP ho deciso di portalo avanti, rendendolo un design animato, con cui poter giocare. Ho già buttato giù diverse idee per poterla mostrare durante un live set, come visual.
Tracciando la tua carriera passo dopo passo, partendo dal primissimo Phryday EP fino al recentissimo Patience and Time EP, è piuttosto chiaro che tu abbia vissuto una notevole evoluzione nello stile di produzione. Come definiresti il tuo genere musicale attuale?
Non direi mai di sottostare ad un genere musicale in particolare: lo chiamo semplicemente “Electronica”. Stile a parte, nel corso degli anni ho prodotto molto più ciò che volevo io, piuttosto che ciò che voleva la moda del momento – ed è per questo che alcuni siti/blog non hanno accettato subito un sound molto diverso come il mio. Adesso invece è il contrario, molti fan hanno apprezzato ed è per questo che andrò avanti su questa via.
Riferendoci alla domanda precedente, in molti sostengono che la tua musica è in un qualche modo differente rispetto a ciò che la mau5trap ci ha abituato ad ascoltare. Sei d’accordo?
Assolutamente si – non c’è nessun altro artista della mau5trap a cui io possa essere accostato, ed è per questo che alcuni fan restano un attimo spiazzati nell’ascoltarmi le prime volte. Vorrei ricordare tanti artisti innovativi, stilisticamente alternativi nella storia di questo label, che purtroppo la legge del mercato ha dovuto limitare – io voglio cambiare questa cosa e voglio riportare all’orecchio di molta gente un sound innovativo tramite la mau5trap.
Sei stato il primo e unico artista della mau5trap che ha interamente curato e prodotti l’intera durata dei mix “We Are Friends”, il ché può essere tradotto come una grande iniezione di fiducia e rispetto nei tuoi confronti. Lo consideri un bel premio per il lavoro che hai svolto fin ora?
Si si, me l’avranno chiesto due, tre volte.. ora non ricordo bene – ma è stato davvero divertente poterci lavorare. Mi hanno chiesto inoltre di prendere parte ad altri progetti, che purtroppo non posso ancora rivelare, ma comunque si, mi dà tanta fiducia. Onestamente, non è un lavoro troppo difficile da portare avanti – è un po come mettere insieme i pezzi di un puzzle. Sono 10 divertenti minuti in cui gioco con la creatività, senza però rovinare il mix.
Hai mai lavorato con deadmau5?
No, non credo che i nostri stili possano fondersi bene insieme. Prima di collaborare con qualunque artista preferisco fare molte valutazioni, per vedere se possa risultare un lavoro che mi stimoli ed emozioni. Attualmente ho in programma delle collaborazioni con artisti al di fuori della musica elettronica (due dei quali che vengono dal mondo del Metal) e credo anche che vogliano tenersi lontano dai principali label di musica elettronica.
“Patience and Time EP” è stato rilasciato da poco, ma ha già ottenuto un grandissimo successo nel panorama della musica elettronica, sposandosi perfettamente con la tradizione musicale della mau5trap dove “Meticolosità” è una parola chiave. Il titolo che hai dato rappresenta il modo in cui lavori? O forse ha un significato più profondo?
Entrambe: rappresenta il modo in cui mi piace produrre ed inoltre ha anche un secondo significato, più profondo. Alcune delle tracce dell’EP hanno 3 anni, e questo perché hanno necessitato di Tempo e Pazienza, appunto! Inoltre ci tengo a dire che ogni traccia rappresenta un momento o un evento in particolare della mia vita che mi ha causato una forte emozione, per cui ho curato in particolare modo la parte melodica. È un EP davvero molto personale e tutta la sua esistenza ha necessitato di Tempo e Pazienza.
Te lo devo assolutamente chiedere: stai lavorando a qualcosa di nuovo?
Oh si! Sto iniziando a lavorare alla produzione di un quarto EP, molto molto diverso. Tutto a partire dal sound fino alle immagini del nuovo EP saranno “oscure”. Voglio riportare l’Electronica ai suoi albori, ai tempi dei Rave, ai tempi in cui The Prodigy rivoluzionavano il mondo della musica. Voglio incorporare anche strumenti live, melodie e toni molto più bassi, influenzate dai Rave e dal Metal. La musica elettronica di oggi è incredibilmente noiosa, nessuno osa promuovere qualcosa di diverso, tutti vogliono il “banale EDM”. Ma tralasciando questo discorso, ho un remix per DJ Starscream (Sid Wilson degli Slipknot) da completare, una collaborazione con un vocalist heavy metal, produzioni di sample pack, e alcune soundtrack per film e videogames, per cui ho tanto lavoro per il futuro!
Ma insomma, quando ti vediamo in Italia?
Non vedo l’ora di venire a visitarla! Mi piacerebbe tantissimo, per cui spero davvero presto!

It’s not definitely uncorrect to argue that Liam Tallon, aka Draft, is representing a mainstay within canadian label mau5trap. The English producer has showed up to easily combine a huge range of musical features accross electronica, that have evolved release after release, shaping into what is his last EP, “Patience and Time“, out now on mau5trap.
Draft made his first steps into electronic music environment in 2013 signing up with UK label Pilot Records, with the release of his first official production, “Phryday EP“, that immediately gave him a lot of credit along the scene. The three-track EP, that maily spaced out into house genre, acted as a springboard for the release of two more EPs under the same label in a very short time, entitled “Makeshift Constellations” and “Pillage“.
The extremely care-taking for the melodies, the accurate use of percussions alongside a deep bass-line and the meticulous way of producing tracks focused the eyes (i mean.. the ears!) of the canadian label on the young producer, who widely demostrated to have all the skills needed to join deadmau5‘s family. In 2015 Draft officially signed up with the major canadian label, making his debut in “We Are Friends Vol 4” with the track “If“. The following year spread a wave of innovation in Draft’s productions, a clear clue that the integration into mau5trap was ultimated, thanks to the release of his first EP with the new label, “Left Behind“.
This four-track EP was followed by the release of the fifth volume of “We Are Friends“, in which Draft played once again a relevant role on curating the full-leght mix. Afterwards, it was the time for the release of another EP, “From Inside“, well known due to the inclusion of the track “Bishop Takes King“, featured in the online documentary Legends Rising, from League of Legends. After taking part to “Foar Moar Vol 1” with the track “Izumi“, it came the time of his latest EP, “Patience and Time“, that a lot of fans consider his crowning achievement.

First of all, an ice breaker question: why did you choose a fluttering wasp to represent your EP? Does it have a particular meaning?
The original idea stemmed from my debut EP on mau5trap. I wanted to design and create an artwork that was unique, stood out, and made people want to find out more about me. As the releases developed, people began to appreciate the Bee design, so I developed it to be a custom design with a designer called Michael Lenick. Everything about the Bee was built from the ground-up, it’s completely animated and we can do whatever we want with it, in any colour/design – in any environment. I’ve already began cooking up ideas for a live show, and how to incorporate it into visuals.
Tracing step by step your music-career from the early beginning of The Phryday EP until now, with Patience and Time EP, is kinda clear that you lived a producing style evolution. How could you define your actual producing genre?
I would never say I have a genre: i’ll simply call it ‘electronic’. I use many acoustic elements, and aim to place all sounds in an organic nature – so they sound real, regardless of whether they are or not. Style-wise, over the years I just wrote more of what I wanted, not what others wanted – which often holds me back as the news sites/blogs aren’t as willing to accept something so different. But as I’ve stuck true to my sound, more and more fans have surfaced – and that’s the way I’ll keep going.
According to the previous question, somebody is feeling confortable to claim that your music is a bit different from what mau5trap usually releases. Do you agree with this statement?
Completely – there is nothing on mau5trap that sounds like me, which often makes it difficult for their audience to accept me. I recall many ground-breaking, stylistically-different artists on that label in it’s past, but due to the market there seems to be fewer and fewer – I want to change that, and open some ears to music via that platform. That label is just a platform for me, but it has been a beneficial stepping-stone in some respects.
You have been the one and only mau5trap artist who has fully curated and produced “We Are Friends” compilation mixes, that may be translated with a huge injection of trust and respect towards you. Is it a pleasant reward for your job?
I got asked to twice, maybe 3 times, I forget now – but it was fun to do. They’ve asked me to do some other production work which I can’t reveal, but it does inject a sense of trust. Being honest, the minimix is not the hardest task to undertake – it’s essentially piecing together a minimix that jumps out to people. It’s a fun 10-minute project for me to get creative with, without trying to overkill it – there has to be a balance.
Have you ever worked with deadmau5?
No, i don’t think our styles would suit. It takes a lot, specifically in electronic music, to excite me lately – and I’d definitely look further afield if I were to collaborate with another artist. Currently, I’ve got a couple projects in progress that are with vocalists/artists from outside of electronic music (2 artists of whom are in the world of Metal music), although I think they would be kept well away from the current platforms of electronic music labels. I’m previous about them. I’d never rule out working with deadmau5, but it would take a project that has to really stimulate me musically. I write from my (dark) soul, so I’m very protective over my music.
“Patience and Time” EP was released a few weeks ago, but it’s already gaining a lot of success in the electronica environment, perfectly suiting with mau5trap producing tradition where “Meticulousness” is a keyword. Is the title summing up the way you use to produce? Or there’s another deeper meaning?
It’s both: the way I produce and a deeper meaning. Some of the tracks on that release were at least 3 years old, so they took both patience and time. Also, label dealings outside of the release during the writing period were getting to me, and I was having to exercise patience and time with those too. I’ve especially enjoyed the way fans are interpretating the title, and putting forth their ideas as to what it means. I love the fact people are willing to commit their time to both listen and try develop an understanding behind the title. It’s also worth noting that each track relates to a period/event in my life were things were causing emotion, so I curated the audio to that. It’s a very personal release, and everything about it required patience and time.
Definitely i must ask you: are you working on something new right now?
I am! I’m laying foundations of the 4th EP, that will be very, very different. I want to bring electronica back to the Rave days, the days where The Prodigy were doing things different to market trends, but the output was so good that it couldn’t be ignored. I’m going to incorporate live instruments, lower tunings, influences from Rave – to Metal – and everything I’m influenced by. Electronic music, unless it’s outside of the dominant “blogs”, is incredibly saturated and tiresome. No one is willing to commit to something different – everyone just wants ‘bubblegum-EDM’. Everything from the sound, to the presentation of the new EP will be dark. Aside from that, I’ve got a remix for DJ Starscream (Sid Wilson from Slipknot) to finish, a collaboration with a heavy metal vocalist, a few sample pack offers, as well as venturing into soundtrack/scores for some video games and TV – so there’s a lot going on, I just need to collect, rebuild and revamp having only just released ‘Patience & Time’.
When will we see you in Italy?
Unsure at the moment, but I’ll look forward to getting there one day. Still haven’t visited Italy, but it’s somewhere I’d love to get to!
