This year, for the first time as media partner for Untold Festival in Cluj Napoca, Romania (check out our recap!), we had the pleasure to interview Macky Gee, one of the most important djs and producers of the drum & bass scene.
Macky Gee, is from Uk, the “headquarter” of drum and bass, with his hit “Tour” that reached 87 milion plays on Spotify, he is heading all the biggest festival in the world.
We had an interesting conversation before his amazing set at Alchemy Stage.
GIULIA: Hi, I’m Giulia from YouBeat, and today we are here with Macky Gee. Thank you very much and let’s start with the first question.
I would like to ask you about drum and bass. We can say that drum and bass is getting more popular day by day. What do you think about it? And , do you think that maybe there could be also some negatives sides of that?
MACKY GEE: Not really, not at all. I can’t think of any at the minute.
It’s good that it’s getting busy now, and people are understanding what drum and bass is all about.
GIULIA: I would like to ask you about MC. In the past they were really important for a DnB dj set. Do you thing they have the same role now?
MACKY GEE: I believe so. I mean, MC’s created the culture of DnB, that was part of the fundamentals of DnB. But [nowadays] it’s hard, we have a lot of Djs traveling across the world. People are really busy. I think that’s probably the best answer for that.
GIULIA: Let’s talk about your music, congratulations on the release of your last single. Your last album was released 4 years ago, do you have something ready?
MACKY GEE: I’ve got an album ready. I’m a fussy person, but i’ve got an album worth of tunes, just, i need to get it out.
GIULIA: Last question.. We are here at Untold and you’ll be live at Alchemy stage in 30 minutes. You already experienced some Romanian crowd. Do you feel it’s going to be different compared to the UK, where DnB is more popular?
Though i see they’re enjoying it here.
MACKY GEE: I think with the UK it’s a bit spoiled for DnB, it’s everywhere in the Uk.
Whereas in Romania, you don’t have as much of it here, so hopefully they’re excited for it. I’m ready
GIULIA: What about Untold festival? Are you excited?
MACKY GEE: Yeah, really. It’s my first time playing here, so really excited for it.
