There are nights that become part of a city’s history, and then there are events that completely redraw the map of international club culture. #JC20 was exactly that: a 10-hour non-stop marathon of music celebrating the first twenty years behind the decks of a true hometown legend, Joseph Capriati.
The location could only be iconic: the former NATO Base in Naples, packed with more than 10,000 clubbers who came from every corner of Italy and the world. A blazing, multicultural dancefloor united by a single vibration.
Seeing Joseph Capriati on that stage was not simply about witnessing the set of a top international DJ, but about retracing the story of a Neapolitan boy who, twenty years ago, took hold of a dream and brought it to the biggest stages of the global techno scene. He opened the night with a solo set, setting the stage with the distinctive class that defines him, before launching into a series of blazing b2bs with global heavyweights such as Quest, Josh Baker, Honey Dijon and Chris Stassy. A convergence of sounds ranging from house and tech house to pure, hard-hitting techno, once again showcasing his incredible versatility.
Among the most emotional and intense moments of the marathon, time seemed to stand still when images of Rino Cerrone appeared on the stage’s gigantic LED wall, a pillar of the Neapolitan techno scene and a human and artistic reference point for Joseph. A sincere tribute, from friend to friend, from student to mentor, that moved the entire crowd.
And speaking of roots, the official embrace of his city could not be missing: the Presidency of SSC Napoli presented Joseph with the club’s official centenary shirt. Wearing it on stage during the final part of the event was the ultimate gesture, cementing an unbreakable bond with his roots.
As the final beats approached, Capriati took complete control of the decks once again for a spine-tingling finale. To trace the line of his legacy and pay tribute to the history of electronic music, he dropped two timeless classics:
