In occasione dell’uscita del nuovo singolo assieme ad Erick Morillo e la cantautrice losangelina Angel Taylor, youBEAT ha il piacere di intervistare Eddie Thoneick.
Ciao Eddie, finalmente venerdì 7 ottobre è uscita ufficialmente in Italia la tua “Lost In You” assieme a Erick Morillo e Angel Taylor, e molte radio la stanno passando. Hai delle date in Italia in programma?
Assolutamente! Un paio di anni fa suonavo ogni mese in Italia. “Lost In You” è ora disponibile su Time Records. I ragazzi della Time sono una squadra fantastica e sicuramente faranno un grande lavoro con questo disco. Al momento non ho date in Italia, ma tornerò presto a suonare da voi.
Insieme a Erick Morillo hai fatto un sacco di tracce. Come e quando nasce la vostra amicizia?
E’ stata una cosa fantastica incrociarsi con Erick alla fine del 2009. Negli ultimi dieci anni ci siamo sempre supportati per quanto riguarda le nostre produzioni e un giorno l’ho incontrato e ci siamo detti: “Dobbiamo lavorare assieme!”. Ho sempre cercato nel corso degli anni una collaborazione che sprigionasse quell’energia che ho quando lavoro con lui. E’ stato un vero piacere lavorare con Erick e quando siamo assieme riusciamo a tirare fuori un sacco di idee. Quando abbiamo deciso di collaborare mi sono rinchiuso in studio qui in Germania e ho iniziato a trovare la melodia al pianoforte, melodia che in seguito divenne “Live Your Life”. Erick lavorò con Sahwwnee Taylor (direttamente da Los Angeles, ndr) sulla voce e insieme registrarono il vocal. Abbiamo messo tutto assieme e così è nata la traccia! E’ stato facile produrre questo pezzo perché non ci furono intoppi particolari. Questo è stato l’inizio di tutto. Successivamente abbiamo pubblicato “Stronger”, “Nothing Better“ (con la voce di Shena, ndr) e “If this Ain´t Love“ (con la voce di Skin, ndr), fino al 2012. Per un po’ di anni ci siamo persi di vista e ognuno ha lavorato per conto suo. Alla fine del 2015 ci siamo rincontrati e abbiamo iniziato a lavorare a “Lost In You”: ho trovato la melodia giusta, la voce abbiamo scelto quella di Angel Taylor e in poco tempo abbiamo messo tutto assieme. Credo che non ho mai lavorato così bene con nessuno a parte con lui. Nel corso degli anni non solo siamo stati ottimi partner sul lavoro, ma siamo diventati anche veri amici. 
Invece te quando hai iniziato a produrre? Da dove nasce la tua passione per la musica elettronica?
Ho iniziato a fare il dj all’età di 14 anni, quindi 24 anni or sono. Mi ha sempre affascinato scoprire nuovi modi di fare musica. A 4 anni ho iniziato ad imparare diversi strumenti musicali, come il pianoforte e la batteria. Nei primi anni ’90, quando la musica house (la cosiddetta eurodance, ndr) ha iniziato ad andare forte in Germania, sono rimasto stupito dai djs che suonavano nei club, cosa che non avevo mai visto prima. Quello era il momento giusto, avevo capito che fare il dj era quello che mi sarebbe piaciuto fare. Comprai qualche giradischi e provai. Avevo fatto bene! Nel 1993 vinsi un concorso in uno dei club più importanti della Germania. Questo mi portò a fare un sacco di serate in giro per Düsseldorf. Nel 1999 comprai il mio primo computer Atari ST, installai Cubase e Akai Sampler e iniziai a produrre. Piano piano ho imparato tutto quello che c’è da sapere per produrre musica.
Cosa pensi del fatto che si dica che l’EDM è morta? Secondo te è ancora il sound del momento?
Non penso che l’EDM sia morta. Soprattutto nella musica pop-commerciale è ancora il sound di riferimento e le persone amano ancora questi suoni. Poi dipende anche in quale parte del mondo ti trovi. In Nord e Sud America l’EDM va ancora molto forte. Anche se i ragazzi sono sempre alla ricerca di nuove sonorità. Alla fine la musica elettronica va a cicli, e tutto torna sempre alla House. In questo momento si sta spostando di più su sonorità Deep House e Classic House, evidentemente generi più freschi!
Hai suonato in tutto il mondo.. C’è un posto dove ti piacerebbe suonare?
Sono sicuro che ci sono dei posti meravigliosi nei quali non ho ancora suonato. Alcuni festival e club sono segnati sulla mia lista “dei desideri”. Ci vuole solo un po’ di tempo 😉
Chi sono secondo te i produttori del momento?
Uno fra tutti che per me è stato fonte di ispirazione è sicuramente Axwell (un terzo degli Swedish House Mafia, ndr). E’ incredibile come produzione dopo produzione riesca sempre a migliorarsi. Ma ci sono anche un sacco di nuove leve che stanno emergendo, anche se la qualità è quella che è. La maggior parte di loro produce cose già sentite. Un produttore bravo si deve distinguere. Sono ancora pochi quelli che davvero meritano.
Ultima domanda meno seria, cosa ne pensi di “I Like to Move it” dei Reel 2 Real? (Ahah)
Assolutamente un classico di tutti i tempi! Fin da subito mi è piaciuta la traccia, rilasciata allora da Strictly Rhythm. E’ stato uno dei primi pezzi che dal club hanno raggiunto le classifiche di tutto il mondo. Credo che Erick Morillo abbia ricevuto tonnellate di dischi di platino per questa pezzo 🙂

Hi Eddie, last Friday, October 7 was released officially in Italy your “Lost In You” with Erick Morillo and Angel Taylor, and many radio are playing. Have you ever played in Italy, and have you dates here?
Absolutely. I´ve played in Italy nearly every month a couple of years back. „lost in You“ My Track with Erick Morillo is out now on Time Records Italy. The guys of Time records have a fantastic team and I thin they will do great work with this record. No dates at the moment, but I hope this track will change it.
Together with Erick Morillo you have done a lot of tracks. How and when did your friendship born?
It´s been a fantastic thing getting together with Erick at the end of 2009. We always have been big supporters of each others music over the last decade and someday I ran into him and we said: “Hey we should work together”! I´ve been looking for a collaboration over the last years that has that special energy when getting together. With Erick it has been a true pleasure working together and if we do get together there´s a flood of inspiration. After deciding working together I sat down in the studio here in Germany and worked on a piano hook which later became “Live Your Life”. Erick worked with Sahwnee taylor on the Vocals and recorded the vocal. We put everything together and the track was born! It was such an easy thing because it went so fluently! That was the start of it all. We further released „Stronger“, „Nothing Better“, „If this Ain´t Love“ until 2012. After that we kind of lost touch for a while as we went different directions musically. In late 2015 I was working in the studio and it kind of started the same wa as “Lost in You“: I had the piano hook, he started working with Angel Taylor on the vocal and we put it all together within a short period of time. Honestly I really think there´s never been anyone I´ve worked so well together than with Erick. Over the years we haven´t just been production partners but became really good friends.
However when did you start producing? From where does your passion for electronic music born?
I started Djing at the age of 14, so 24 years ago. I´ve always been interested in discovering new ways of making music. At the age of 4 I started learning various instruments like Piano and drums. In the early 90´s when house music began to evolve in germany I was amazed by the Djs playing in the clubs, which I´ve never seen before. That was the minute I knew this is what I´d love to do. So I got myself some turntables and tried it out. My should was sold! In 93 I won a Dj contest in one of Germany´s best clubs. Followed by a lot of gigs around the area of Düsseldorf. In 1999 I bought myself my first Computer Atari ST, Cubase, Akai Sampler and started producing. My musical interest started to grow and I teached myself everything I needed to know in producing music.
What do you think that it is said that the EDM is dead? Is still the sound of the moment?
I don´t think EDM is dead. It´s still everywhere especially in the more commercial field and people love it. It also depends where in the world you are. North & South america are still very strong with EDM. But the Kids are looking for new sounds. It´s always been a circle where at some point everything gets back to House. And we are at that point where the Kids get into more Deep House and Classic House sounds as they´re looking for something fresh!
You have played all over the world. There is a place where would you like to play?
I´m pretty sure there are some amazing places still to discover. I think there´s still some festivals or clubs that are on my to do list. But sometimes it just takes a while 😉
Who do you think are the producers of the moment?
For me someone who has been an inspiration since a long time is Axwell. Always raises the bar with his productions. But there are a lot of fresh new guys rising up. There´s a flood of new people, but that doesn’t keen that the quality is good. Most of them really do the same stuff like everyone else and it´s lacking unique-ness. There still are a few ones that really stick out.
Last question less serious, what do you think of “I Like to Move It” Reel 2 Real? (Haha)
Absolute all-time classic! I loved the track back then when it was released on Strictly Rhythm. So it really was a club record and started to blow up internationally later on. I think Erick Morillo has received tons of Platinum records for that 😉
