Durante Nameless Music Festival abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di intervistare Lugui e Pedrão, meglio noti come Cat Dealers, fratelli brasiliani che stanno lentamente ma costantemente diffondendo il loro sound e facendosi conoscere in tutto il mondo. Tra i più influenti produttori emergenti dalla scena musicale brasiliana, la coppia di fratelli ha spopolato nelle classifiche globali arrivando al numero 48 della lista DJ Mag Top 100 del 2018!
- Avete appena finito il vostro set, raccontateci un po’ come vi sentite e diteci le vostre emozioni a caldo siccome è la prima volta che suonate in Italia.
Siamo molto felici, il pubblico di Nameless è stato incredibile e pieno di energia, inoltre hai ragione, questa non è solo la nostra prima volta in Italia per una performance ma in generale quindi siamo anche molto emozionati.
- Questa è probabilmente la domanda che vi viene posta più spesso per ovvi motivi, potete raccontarci come è nata l’idea di chiamarvi “Cat Dealers“?
Sì, questa è decisamente la domanda che ci viene posta più spesso. Abbiamo deciso di chiamarci Cat Dealers perché abbiamo una decina di gatti a casa. Nostra madre ha iniziato ad aiutare i gatti di strada alcuni anni fa, ne ha salvati davvero tanti negli anni. Dal momento che stava avendo un enorme successo con l’assistenza ogni volta che ne trovava uno lo potava a casa e alla fine ci siamo trovati con la casa piena di gatti. La prima cosa che tutti dicono quando vedono casa nostra è “wow, avete davvero tanti gatti”, e la nostra risposta è “ne volete uno?” Ecco perché abbiamo scelto il nome Cat Dealers.
- Raccontateci un po’ degli inizi della vostra carriera artistica, quando avete iniziato e come?
Abbiamo cominciato a provare a produrre nel nostro studio a casa più o meno nel 2012 e abbiamo continuato a imparare da soli per 3 anni, non ci chiamavamo nemmeno Cat Dealers; il duo come lo conoscete ora nasce nel 2016 quando il livello delle nostre produzioni è diventato abbastanza buono da creare qualcosa di pubblicabile e incredibilmente il nostro secondo singolo “Your Body (Remix)” è diventato quasi subito virale.
- Visto che l’avete citata, diteci come è cambiata la vostra carriera tra il prima e il dopo release del singolo.
Non si può dire che è cambiato qualcosa perchè “Your Body” non ci ha fatto fare il salto di qualità ma è stata proprio l’inizio, come vi dicevamo è stato il secondo singolo che abbiamo pubblicato. Siamo passati, sopratutto in Brasile, da essere “artisti da cameretta” ai mainstage dei festival più famosi.
- Siete brasiliani, per la vostra esperienza ciò che funziona in America funziona allo stesso modo anche in Europa oppure dovete adattarvi?
Penso che ci siano delle tendenze ma ogni luogo è diverso dall’altro musicalmente parlando, ovviamente noi cerchiamo di mantenere la nostra linea, il nostro carattere distintivo adattandoci anche alle richieste del pubblico. Per esempio in Asia funziona molto tutto ciò che è molto energetico, in Brasile piace molto di più la Deep House mentre qui in Europa si è molto più aperti a tutti i generi. Il mix tra mantenere un’identità e adattarsi a chi sta ascoltando, sentire il pubblico, è l’essenza del nostro lavoro.
- Visto che siete fratelli, raccontateci un po’ dei lati positivi e negativi del lavorare assieme.
Ci sono più lati positivi che negativi di sicuro (si guardano e ridono, ndr), a volte discutiamo anche ma alla fine ci siamo abituati, discutiamo da quando siamo piccoli come fanno tutti i fratelli. Siamo comunque sulla stessa linea d’onda di solito e le discussioni nascono per i dettagli più superflui.
- Il vostro genere è ben definito, tuttavia molte volte gli artisti producono un genere ma ascoltano tutt’altro, quali sono i vostri artisti e generi preferiti anche al di fuori della musica elettronica?
Chiaramente ci piace molto quello che produciamo, ma i nostri artisti preferiti sono Skrillex e Flume, sono i migliori produttori al mondo e ne siamo grandissimi fan. Ascoltiamo anche molto rock, come Foo Fighters e i Green Day. Ci sono tantissimi altri artisti che ci piacciono, Martin Garrix per esempio fa degli show pazzeschi oppure Hans Zimmer tanto per citarne uno che fa musica completamente diversa dalla nostra infatti se avete sentito la nostra intro è molto tendente all’orchestrale.
- Ascoltando così tanti artisti diversi da cosa prendete ispirazione? Avete dei passi prestabiliti nella creazione di una canzone?
No non ci sono passi prestabiliti, a volte l’ispirazione parte da un vocal, a volte da un sample particolare.
- Quali sono i vostri piani futuri?
Il nostro obiettivo principale per ora è diventare più internazionali possibili, abbiamo un tour in Asia che in questo momento è un mercato molto florido per la musica elettronica, altre tappe negli USA e vogliamo raggiungere più persone possibili con la nostra musica. Abbiamo alcune tracce pronte che usciranno nei prossimi mesi.
- Al di fuori del Brasile dove sentite che il pubblico è più vicino e apprezza il vostro stile?
In tutti i Paesi in cui abbiamo suonato abbiamo riscontrato un grande calore da parte del pubblico ma se dovessimo scegliere Europa e Messico sarebbero in cima alla classifica, in Asia dobbiamo impegnarci di più perchè come abbiamo detto sono abituati ad un sound più energico. In Europa invece è possibile sperimentare molto di più.

- You have just finished your set, tell us a little about how you feel and your emotions as it is the first time you play in Italy.
We are very happy, the audience of Nameless was incredible and full of energy, moreover you are right, this is not only our first time in Italy for a performance but in general so we are also very excited.
- This is probably the most asked question for obvious reasons, can you tell us how did you come up with the name “Cat Dealers”?
Yes, this is definitely the most asked question. We decided to call ourselves Cat Dealers because we have a ten cats at home. Our mother started helping street cats some years ago, she really saved so many over the years. Since she was having tremendous success with assistance whenever she found one she would take it at home and we ended up with the house full of cats. The first thing everyone says when they see our house is “wow, you really have so many cats”, and our answer is “do you want one?” That’s why we chose the name Cat Dealers.
- Tell us a little bit about the beginning of your artistic career, when did you start and how?
We started trying to produce in our studio at home more or less in 2012 and we had continued to learn by ourselves for 3 years, we weren’t even called Cat Dealers; the duo as you know it now was born in 2016 when the level of our productions has become good enough to create something publishable and incredibly our second single “Your Body (Remix)” has almost immediately become viral.
- Since you mentioned it, tell us how your career has changed after the release of the song.
It cannot be said that something has changed because “Your Body” did not make us make a leap in quality but it was the beginning of all, as we said it was the second single we published. We have passed from being, especially in Brazil, from being “bedroom artists” to the mainstages of the most famous festivals.
- You are Brazilians, according to your experience what works in America works in the same way in Europe or do you have to adapt?
I think there are general trends but, musically speaking, every place is different from another, of course we try to keep our line, our distinctiveness but we also try to adapt to the demands of the public. For example, in Asia everything that is very energetic works very well, in Brazil the Deep House is much more appreciated, while Europe is much more open to all genres. The mix between maintaining an identity and adapting to the public is the essence of our work.
- As you are brothers, tell us a little about the positive and negative aspects of working together.
There are more positives than negatives for sure (they look at each other and laugh), sometimes we discuss but in the end we are used to it, we have been discussing since we were children as all the brothers do. However we are usually on the same wave and the discussions are about the most superfluous details.
- Your genre is well defined, but many times artists produce a genre but listen to something else, what are your favorite artists and genres even outside of electronic music?
Clearly we really like what we produce, but our favorite artists are Skrillex and Flume, they are the best producers in the world and we are great fans of them. We also listen to a lot of rock, like Foo Fighters and Green Day. There are so many other artists that we like, Martin Garrix for example does crazy shows or Hans Zimmer just to name one that makes a type of music completely different from ours, in fact if you heard our intro it is very orchestral-like.
- What do you take inspiration from? Do you have pre-defined steps in creating a song?
No, there are no set steps, sometimes the inspiration starts from a vocal sometimes from a particular sample.
- What are your future plans?
Up to now our main goal is to become as much international as possible. We have a tour in Asia that right now is a very thriving market for electronic music, other gigs in the USA and we want to reach as many people as possible with our music. We have some tracks ready for release in the coming months.
- Outside of Brazil, where do you feel that the audience is closer and appreciates your style the most?
In all the countries where we played we found great warmth, but if we have to choose, Europe and Mexico would be at the top of the list; in Asia we have to work harder because as we have said, they are used to a more energetic sound. In Europe, on the other hand, it is possible to experience much more.
