Seconda esperienza di youBEAT in rappresentanza italiana ad Ultra Europe dopo l’esperienza dell’anno scorso. Per la settima edizione (e i prossimi 4 anni) si è trasferita nella nuova location Park Mladezi e non più al Poljud Stadion in seguito ad un accordo raggiunto tra la Città di Spalato e la Pubblica Istituzione “Split Sports Facilities” dopo aver analizzato i seguenti punti:
– le molteplici lamentele per il danneggiamento del campo da gioco da parte della società calcistica locale HNK Hajduk
– la preparazione dello stadio per il match Hajduk – Gzira United.
Abbiamo intervistato il duo balcanico Vanillaz, composto dal croato Marko Bucic e dallo sloveno Miha Pajk, prima della loro esibizione sul MainStage di Ultra Europe 2019 Domenica 14 Luglio dalle 20 alle 21 dopo le loro esperienze sul MainStage di Ultra Korea e Ultra Singapore.
Come vi siete conosciuti e avete iniziato a lavorare insieme?
Ci siamo conosciuti circa 10 anni fa nella costa dei club in Croazia, ero un resident dj lì e Miha era guest in quella serata, quindi ci siamo incontrati ed è stato come “amore a prima vista” in termini di intesa. Abbiamo iniziato a collaborare per alcuni brani per poi iniziare a suonare insieme.
E la scelta del nome “Vanillaz”?
Miha l’ha pensato, suonava cool ed è nato per caso, abbiamo controllato il nome e dato che questa parola non esisteva ancora su Internet l’abbiamo fatta nostra.
Le vostre origini sono croate e slovene ed ora siamo a Spalato per Ultra Europe, la seconda città più grande in Croazia. Com’è la “situazione della musica dance” nel tuo paese?
La nostra industria è in fase di sviluppo, stiamo cercando di arrivare ad un livello internazionale ma non siamo ancora abbastanza forti come la scena olandese o inglese. Siamo molto orgogliosi e felici di far parte di Ultra Europe perché questo tipo di festival sono davvero importanti e aiutano tanto per creare network tra artisti e valorizzare musica.
Potreste spiegarci il vostro stile e il work-flow come duo?
Dopo anni di lavoro insieme abbiamo finalmente trovato il nostro suono distintivo e le nostre tracce imminenti mostreranno una sorta di evoluzione. Le idee di Marco incontrano le mie, discutiamo e ci confrontiamo per creare insieme qualcosa di unico e condiviso, ch parte dalle differenze come elementi chiave.
Fondamentalmente iniziamo con il drop perché prima di tutto siamo djs e la nostra musica deve funzionare sul dance floor.
Il vostro ultimo singolo “Time To Shine” con Wahlstedt è ora disponibile! Come è nato il progetto e quali prossime collaborazioni sono in arrivo?
Avevamo pronto questo singolo prima di Ultra per poterlo spingere ora al festival. Il nostro fratello Wahlstedt ha inserito il suono svedese in questo brano estivo che fonde il nostro suono con la sua firma.
Da un po’ di tempo siamo al lavoro sul nuovo singolo “Ederlezi” prodotto con Divolly & Markward. Questa è una canzone popolare gitana ben nota nella nostra regione, pronta da un paio d’anni nel nostro computer e già presentata in anteprima in radio con ottimi risultati. Uscirà a metà agosto quando tutte le cose saranno confermate non appena avremo confermato tutti i diritti d’autore.

Quale DAW di produzione usi e quale plugin preferisci e usi di più?
Lavoriamo da sempre con Cubase 10 e lo adoriamo (Cu f ** king Base) e il nostro plugin preferito è Serum di Steve Duda e Deadmau5.
Quali sono le tre parole chiave di Ultra Europe secondo te e quale edizione per paese proveresti?
Come artista la parola numero uno è “Benedizione” perché ci porta ad un altro livello ed è una grande opportunità per noi.
La parola numero due è “Crazy“, perché dopo aver suonato nei MainStage di Ultra Korea e Singapore questa rimane la nostra casa dove l’atmosfera è unica e particolare.
La parola numero tre è “One-ness” perché ci sono così tante nazionalità nello stesso posto e momento e ci sentiamo uniti ai nostri fratelli messicani, italiani, spagnoli e così via sotto un’unica grande bandiera targata ULTRA.
Abbiamo adorato l’Asia ma vorremmo viaggiare sempre di più negli Stati Uniti e in giro per il mondo, al fine di diffondere la nostra musica!

How did you meet and start working together?
We met around 10 years ago in Crotian coast club, I was a resident there and Miha was a guest dj so we kinda connected first time it was like “love at first sight” in business terms and then we started collaborating for some tracks and we did some shows together.
What about the choice of the name “Vanillaz”?
It was just a random and Miha thought about it, it sounded cool, we checked the name and since this word doesn’t exist on the internet and we took it.
You come from Croatia and Slovenia and we’re now in Split for Ultra Europe, the second biggest city in Croatia. How is the “dance music situation” in your country?
Our industry is in a kinda development situation, we’re trying to get it in a international scene but we’re not strong enough as dutch or UK scene. We’re so proud and happy to be part of Ultra Europe because this kind of festivals are so important and help so much, with one love.
Could you explain us your style and your workflow as duo?
After years working together we finally found our signature sound and our upcoming tracks will show kinda evolution of style, since we’re now on the path of our signature sound. Marco’s idea are something, mine are different and we discuss and create together working on the differences which are the key elements.
Basically we initially start with the drop because first of all we’re djs and our things need to work on the dancefloor.
Your latest single “Time To Shine” with Wahlstedt is out now! How did the project come up and which next collaborations are coming?
We had this single ready before Ultra in order to push it now at the festival. Our brother Wahlstedt put the swedish sound in this summer-ish track that blend our sound with his signature.
At the moment there is a long time coming track with Serbian roots titled “Ederlezi” produced with Divolly & Markward. This is a gipsy song well known in our region, ready for a couple of years in our computer and we already premiered on radio and the people went crazy. It’s gonna come in mid-August when all the as soon as we have all the copyrights things confirmed.

Which production DAW do you use and which plugin you prefer and use more?
We work from the beginning with Cubase 10 and we love it (Cu f**king Base) and our favorite plugin is Serum from Steve Duda and Deadmau5.
Which are the three keywords of Ultra Europe in your opinion and which country edition would you try?
As artist the word number one is “Blessing” because it bring us in another level and it’s a big opportunity for artists.
Word number two is “Crazy”, we played Ultra Korea and Singapore mainstages but you know this is our country and it’s unique.
Word number three is “One-ness” because there are so many nationalities on the same floor and we feel one with our mexican, italian, spanish brothers and so on under a only big ULTRA flag.
We loved Asia but we will love to do more US and travel the more possible in order to spread our music starting from our “ground zero” here in Croatia.
